Brenen's Areas of Specialization
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
Brenen is trained in the latest, evidence-based methods for treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), a motor speech disorder in which children know what they want to say but have difficulty coordinating the movements needed for clear speech. These methods include:-
DTTC (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing): the leading motor learning approach for CAS-
PROMPT: a hands-on technique that employs tactile cues to guide accurate speech placement-
Principles of motor learning: structured practice that helps children develop consistent and reliable speech skills
Brenen works closely with parents to create a meaningful target word list tailored to each child's and family's priorities. She recommends frequent, short sessions (2–3 times a week for 30 minutes) to promote effective motor learning. Brenen is also listed in the Apraxia Kids SLP Directory as a recognized provider.
Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)
Brenen brings years of expertise in AAC and Assistive Technology and has a certificate from the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Assistive Technology program. She adopts a total communication approach, valuing and building on all methods a child uses to communicate—including signs, gestures, picture symbols, and high-tech speech-generating devices. Brenen collaborates with families to ensure AAC is integrated at home, providing continuous communication support beyond therapy sessions.
Early Intervention
The research is clear: earlier intervention leads to better long-term outcomes. Brenen specializes in working with infants and toddlers who show early signs of communication delays, offering both direct therapy and comprehensive parent coaching to accelerate progress.
For children under 3, Brenen can coordinate with regional center services and school districts to ensure a seamless, well-supported care plan.
Why In-Home Therapy Works — Especially for Young Children
Children learn best in familiar, comfortable environments. When therapy happens at home, children are more relaxed, more engaged, and more likely to generalize new skills into everyday routines. In-home sessions also give Brenen direct insight into your family's natural communication rhythms. She can coach you in real time using the toys, books, and daily activities already in your home.
What to Expect from a Speech Therapy Evaluation
Not sure if your child needs speech therapy? A thorough evaluation with Brenen is the best first step. During an evaluation, Brenen will:
Assess your child's speech sound production, language comprehension, and expressive communication
Screen for characteristics of CAS, apraxia, or motor speech disorders
Review AAC needs if applicable
Gather a complete developmental and communication history from you
Provide a written report with findings and a recommended plan of care
Evaluations are conducted in your home and typically take 60–90 minutes. Following the evaluation, Brenen will walk you through results and recommendations in plain language — no confusing jargon.
